Лимонада со краставица и ѓумбир / Sassy water

scroll down for the recipe in english

the idea for this lemonade came from a health/fitness/nutrition site, where it says that this drink helps maintaining flat belly. i don't know about the flat belly, but i know that this lemonade is very refreshing, especially in a hot day like today.*

* also try our iced green tea elixir with ginger and lemon.

it's very easy to make: in 2 l water add 1 medium cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced, 1 lemon, thinly sliced, 1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger and around 10 spearmint leaves.
leave in the fridge for a few hours or overnight and in the morning you'll have a cold and really refreshing drink.

how long can you keep using the same lemon, cucumber, and mint? how do you know when it has "turned"?

bojana said...

karen, i don't know, i haven't tried using the same lemon, cucumber and mint.

How many times in one day can you drink this? I assume it loosens the bowels?

bojana said...

you can drink 2 litres of the lemonade a day. we made it a few times this summer and drank a lot because it's very refreshing.
i didn't notice loosening of the bowels, but i noticed reduced bloating. i don't know if i'm explaining this very well.

Can you reuse any of the ingredients after you've finished drinking the first 2L of water? Or can you only use the mint leaves, cucumber and lemon once?

bojana said...

i'm not sure about reusing the ingredients. i haven't tried it. i suppose they can be reused once.
please let us know if you try it.

Anonymous said...

I think it would be safe to only use the ingredients once a lot of bacteria is on the mint leaves. The lemon and ginger may retard the growth, but why take chances?

Anonymous said...

I am confused, is there ginger in this too?

lindasmcd said...

This recipe comes from Prevention Magazine's Flat Belly Diet. Which is terrific btw. The recipe, as posted, left out fresh grated ginger. It takes a bit of getting used to but it is VERY refreshing. Oh & it doesn't turn b/c you're supposed to drink this amount everyday. You make a new one each night for the next day.

Anonymous said...

do you heat the water or just use cold?

bojana said...

just use cold water and keep the lemonade in the fridge.

Anonymous said...

How many ounces or cup of water per liter?

Kathy said...

ciewsiyt avesplLike a tea bag, I think you could use the same ingredients twice, if you drank this refreshing brew fairly quickly. I would not wait a week and try to reuse. For the record, Washed mint leaves have no more bacteria on them than any other herb. As a matter of fact, mint aides in digestion, and helps rid the mouth of unwanted bacteria.

I see the ginger listed in the recipe. I used a recipe similar to this while pregnant to reduce water retention with my midwife's blessing. I had lost the recipe. Thanks for having it here (found it through my sisters on pinterest)

Was wondering when ur drinking this do u need to be on a special diet cause I eat whatever I have at home don't know if I should only be eating veg and fruit with it or just my regular food?

Anonymous said...

My son gave me a recipe similar to this using lime, cucumber, water blended with ice and a little sweetener. You blend it in the blender strain it and add mint. It is awesome and kids love it.

I am not drinking this as a "diet", but to have something tasty to drink. It just happens that it is good for you too!! Very clean taste, not too tangy from lemon. I add no sweetner. I did use the same ingredients twice, two days in a row, drinking the water completely each time. I have had no bowel problems of any kind drinking this. So tasty and crisp that I can't stop!!

Jules said...

I never thought about putting cucumber into lemonade. Wow, beautiful idea!

Nick Hammond said...

I tried out re-using the same lemon, cucumber, etc again by just adding more water to the jug, but it doesn't work so well. The water begins to taste bitter, and is not as refreshing.

Anonymous said...

I don't have any fresh ginger. Do I have to use it? will I still get the same results without it?

Anonymous said...

would i just put all the ingredients in the blender and mix it and drink it?

sitnoseckano said...

Just put the ingredients in a bowl, and leave them overnight. Dont blend them.

Anonymous said...

Just a random question...where did you find the drink bottle at? I really like it!!

bojana said...

ou, it's from bulgaria, i think. it was very old, from my grandmother. but it broke, i no longer have it :-(
it was really nice, thin glass and heat-proof.

Stef said...

I added some basil leaves to it also. Next is to put it, with some Limoncello in the seltzer charger for an after dinner drink... mmmmm

is the cucumber an english one or the thicker skinned type??

Hi! I'd like to try this because it looks delicious but I want to know if you have lost some weight by drinking this :) Thanks!

Heather C said...

I would also like to know if you have lost weight from this drink? Also, if you don't have mint leaves, will just the lemon and cucumber work?

bojana said...

well, i didn't lose weight because i'm not on a diet. i make this lemonade cause it's tasty and very refreshing in summer.

You can use a very large mason jar as well. I bought one to make sun ice. It doesn't pour as well but takes up less room in the fridge. I like the fact it has a lid as well.

I just had a cold glass....it was very refreshing. I can drink this all day! BTW- fresh grated ginger was left out on description in pintrest. I'm glad I visited the blog. The Freshly grated ginger really adds to flavoring.

Anonymous said...

Can you use the ground ginger spice instead of the fresh ginger? If so, how much? Thanks!

bojana said...

i havn't tried it, but i suppose you can use ground ginger instead of fresh ginger. i would start with 1 teaspoon.

Anonymous said...

I have used this before and i must say its really great, it helps with bloating as well (thats why i started using it). i have made two jugs out of the same ingredients and then made new one. it does boost your energy and tastes pretty good.

Anonymous said...

I could only find ground Ginger & No spearmint leaves so I just got peppermint extract.
Will those ingredients still work as Well as the others?

Anonymous said...

Do you just drop everything in and let it sit or am I supposed to actually squeeze the lemon juice out into it?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know how long ginger would stay fresh?..or how to keep it fresh?.. id only use it for this and don't want it to go to waste. How long does the lemonade stay good? Are you supposed to drink 2 L a day? ... thanks, heather in wisconsin

bojana said...

i keep the ginger in the fridge wrapped in cling film. it stays fresh for two weeks or more. or you can freeze it in pieces.

Is there anything that I could use thats not Cucumber? its pretty much my least favorite food ever and my boyfriend wouldnt touch it either if he knew it was in there... Were both really trying to eat right!

Anonymous said...

Can i drink this if im breastfeeding??

Anonymous said...

There isn't anything in this that would harm the baby. I don't see why you would have a problem drinking this and breastfeeding. It's just food, in water essentially.

Anonymous said...

I put the mint leaves, cucumber, and lemon in the water. It has an odd taste. What is it supposed to taste like?

Anonymous said...

Are the spearmint leaves the same as mint..I have fresh mint growing in my backyard??

Anonymous said...

So when you drink this can you eat anything or is this like a meal replacement drink?

Anonymous said...

I suppose you can eat the cucumber after too? I would hate to throw it away.

Anonymous said...

Drink it all in the same day. Add some Aloe Vera Juice to the mix for extra benifits. When it's all gone, remove the lemon slices and blend the "leftovers" with some fruit and ice for an awesome smoothie!

bojana said...

brilliant idea, adding aloe vera juice and making smoothie!

I love reading the comments. Lemon and cucumber are natural diuretics. It is not Lemonade, per say, but like a detox for kidneys and a refreshing drink. It is not a diet and doesn't matter what you eat. She says in the beginning to sluce, not blend.

Unknown said...

I just like alternatives to drinks with sweetners. I am going to go ahead and try this. Pictures are beautiful as well. Nice blog!

Ginger stays fresh in the freezer, if you only are using it for this. Take it out 10-20 minutes before you're going to use it. I added some agave nectar (same as honey in nutritional value, & a very similar taste) to sweeten it up a bit. Absolitely amazing! I've lost three pounds in a week, & I have less bloating! The mint combats bad breath, so its a great after dinner drink. The ginger fights heartburn (my mom tried it and her heartburn has virtually disappeared). The lemon & cucumber are metabolism boosting, & are very flavorful. The more I drink it, the more I love it!

Anonymous said...

The drink looks great and I can't wait to try it. This will be a tasty option since water can be boring :)

Anonymous said...

So I left mine in the fridge for a week...due to the fact I was out of town. I am drinking it now, and it tastes better than it did before. My question is, is it safe? It smells good and the fruit still looks fresh.

Thanks Angie

bojana said...

Angie, i suppose there's no harm in drinking it if it tastes good.

Anonymous said...

Just made it!Can't wait to taste it.Thanks for sharing!:)

Anonymous said...

It sounds yummy but I‘m confused about whether you can drink it for more than a day. How long will it keep for? Thanks xx

bojana said...

i haven't kept it for more than 2 days. i think there will be change in taste after that.

Looking forward to trying this. My cousin talked about it yesterday. Being summer, it will be good with the fresh cucumber and fresh mint (which we have planted). Once the fruits, vegetables and herbs have infused, could you keep the water longer than a day if you strained the solids out?

bojana said...

Hi, J. I have drank the water a day longer, strained from the solids, and it's fine.
